Presentation of the submarine link Menorca-Mallorca

Informative sessions on energy

Red Eléctrica contributes to the dissemination of knowledge regarding the functioning of the electricity system by encouraging participation in conferences and training/informative sessions.

The formal commissioning of the submarine electricity link between Ciutadella, Menorca and Cala Mesquida, Mallorca, took place on 13 July 2020. This highly challenging technological and environmental project was carried out by Red Eléctrica.

The institutional act held in Ciutadella was attended by the chairwoman of the company, Beatriz Corredor, the fourth Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera; the President of the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol; the president of the Island Council of Menorca, Susana Mora; the Vice-President and Minister of Energy Transition and Productive Sectors, Juan Pedro Yllanes and the Mayoress of Ciutadella, Joana Gomila.

This link is a strategic infrastructure that integrates the island of Menorca by connecting it to the electricity grid of the other Balearic Islands and to the peninsular and European grid at the same time. The investment of €84 million makes the electricity supply in Menorca more secure and reliable, enables the evacuation of renewable energy and reduces CO2 emissions. It is a significant advance towards energy transition in the Balearic Islands.

All these actions taken also serve to highlight the guarantees for the protection of the fauna and flora and rural heritage that have constantly guided the implementation of the project.
