This Thursday, Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad (Sustainability Excellence Association), Redeia, and Fundación Global Nature unveiled the ‘Guide to Integrating Biodiversity in Businesses’ —a brochure designed to inspire companies operating in Spain to transform their commitments to nature conservation into tangible actions.

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán; the Chairwoman of Redeia, Beatriz Corredor; and the President and Secretary General of Sustainability Excellence Association, Carles Navarro and Juan Alfaro, respectively, took part in the presentation held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, attended by over 120 people.

Hugo Morán's speech focused on the importance of ensuring that biodiversity permeates all areas of society, highlighting the special significance of businesses as one of these areas. He emphasised that "there can be no economic guarantees without respect for biodiversity."

According to Beatriz Corredor, Chairwoman of Redeia, "the loss of biodiversity is one of the most serious and urgent challenges facing our society. It is essential for companies, with the commitment of their senior management, to integrate the protection of natural capital into their decision-making. This should translate into systematic approaches and actions that transform the way they operate within their value chain."

Meanwhile, Carles Navarro added that "private entities play a key role in biodiversity management through the transformation of their practices, managing their impact at operational sites, influencing their value chain, and promoting broader systemic changes."

Amanda del Río, Deputy Director of the Fundación Global Nature and author of the Guide, stated that 'at the Fundación Global Nature, we believe that biodiversity represents a unique opportunity to redesign economic activities with a regenerative approach. Beyond minimising impacts or ecological footprints, this involves creating positive impacts on nature while generating social value. Companies can align their investments with science-based targets and the needs of local territories.’

The Guide to Integrating Biodiversity in Businesses provides current insights on biodiversity management and ESG, aiming to equip large and small companies with the essential keys to effectively manage their impacts and dependencies related to nature. This serves as the first step in understanding and managing their risks (operational, financial, legal, reputational, and in relation to their stakeholders). In short, to help them understand why it is important to integrate biodiversity into their business strategy and how to incorporate these aspects into their decision-making.

This guide includes cases of companies that have already adopted the approach of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), as well as lessons learned from companies that have incorporated their climate and nature goals into their operations with a regenerative approach. This means going beyond merely minimising or offsetting the negative impacts of their operations on nature; regeneration involves restoring, revitalising, and enhancing ecosystems and biodiversity in their areas of operation and across their supply chain.

The brochure features case studies from Redeia, Endesa, and AgForest—a Spanish startup specialising in remote sensing—that address challenges in geodata management.

The guide was developed by Sustainability Excellence Association with contributions from Redeia and Fundación Global Nature. Key contributors include Amanda del Río, and Rodrigo Fernández-Mellado (Co-Director at Biodiversity Node). The publication also contains contributions by Ángel Salinas (Sustainability Project Manager at Redeia), and Jorge Pina (Endesa’s Head of Environment).
