Almost 440,000 euros allocated
Redeia promotes energy efficiency in four municipalities in Badajoz
  • Redeia is promoting solutions in Fuente de Cantos, Maguilla, Quintana de la Serena, and Fuente del Maestre to support their ecological transition and reduce energy costs.
  • These initiatives are part of Redeia's Comprehensive Impact Strategy, which maximises the positive social and environmental impact in the area in which it operates.
  • Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of Redeia, has completed key electrical infrastructure in Badajoz, including the 400 kV substations in Fuentes de Cantos, Maguilla, and La Serena. The Fuentes del Maestre substation is expected to follow shortly.

The municipal councils of Fuente de Cantos, Maguilla, Quintana de la Serena, and Fuente del Maestre will benefit from energy efficiency solutions that help advance their ecological transition and lower energy costs. These initiatives, funded with approximately 440,000 euros by Redeia, the parent company of Red Eléctrica, are the result of collaboration with the four municipalities.

Initiatives include replacing lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights to reduce municipal budgets, acquiring electric vehicles, and promoting vocational training courses in renewable energy, which will equip students to carry out improvements or construction projects in public buildings.

These four interventions are in the implementation phase and all of them are expected to be completed during 2025. These initiatives were developed through consultation processes between Redeia and the Municipal Councils, in alignment with Redeia's Comprehensive Impact Strategy. With this strategy, the company commits to creating a positive impact in the municipalities where it develops its electrical infrastructures.

Red Eléctrica has completed three new 400 kV substations in Fuente de Cantos, Maguilla, and Quintana de la Serena. These will supply electricity to long-demanded railway lines in Extremadura and support new industrial projects in the region by integrating renewable energy. Soon, the Don Álvaro substation, which will support the power supply of the Mérida-Puertollano railway line, and the Fuentes del Maestre substation, primarily intended for the integration of renewables, will be added to these substations.

For Patricia Crego, Redeia's manager in Extremadura: 'These initiatives reflect our commitment to the region and its communities, extending beyond infrastructure. We are dedicated to addressing gender, territorial, intergenerational, and digital disparities while fostering social cohesion and sustainable development across the regions where we operate. Our projects and initiatives in Extremadura are a great example.'

Quintana de la Serena

In Quintana de la Serena, Red Eléctrica is promoting the construction of a photovoltaic installation aimed at self-consumption to supply public lighting and will renew the external control panels. The action will improve energy efficiency, minimise light pollution and CO2 emissions, and lower municipal electricity costs.

Maguilla

Red Eléctrica has signed an agreement with the Maguilla Municipal Council under which it is implementing self-consumption projects at municipal facilities: the Municipal Hall, the swimming pool, and the cultural centre. These initiatives will significantly reduce energy consumption, leading to long-term financial savings for the municipality and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Fuente de Cantos
In Fuente de Cantos, Red Eléctrica supports the Municipal Council by purchasing electric vehicles for municipal services, which will help reduce CO2 emissions and the fuel bill for the Council.

Fuente del Maestre

Meanwhile, in Fuente del Maestre, Red Eléctrica is promoting the development of seven self-consumption projects for municipal facilities, four of which are being executed or have been executed by students from the municipal training workshop, which specialises in photovoltaic installations. Students receive vocational training at the school, preparing them to enter the green job market. Several of them have already found employment or internships in the renewable energy sector.
