European recognition for Redeia and its subsidiary, Red Eléctrica
Grupo Motor for the Energy Transition received a special recognition in RGI's 'Good Practice of the Year'

Since its creation in 2022, Grupo Motor has mobilised over €11 million of public and private investment for the development of energy transition projects via local action groups

The European platform 'Renewables Grid Initiative' (RGI) has honoured Grupo Motor for Territorial Development of the Energy Transition with a special recognition in the communication & engagement category as part of the Good Practice of the Year 2024 awards. This initiative is promoted by Redeia via Red Eléctrica, its subsidiary. For the past two years, it has been working to accelerate the energy transition in rural communities as a means to counter climate change. Furthermore, it has also been fighting for meeting its 2030 targets set out in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), the Paris Agreement, and the European Green Deal.

Grupo Motor for Territorial Development of the Energy Transition unites 47 organisations, including local action groups, businesses, cooperatives, and educational institutions. It focuses on empowering rural Spain through the creation of energy communities, the establishment of community transformation offices, and the development of cooperative projects to promote decarbonisation.

Since its creation in 2022, Grupo Motor has mobilised over €11 million of public and private investment for the development of energy transition projects by local action groups. In turn, it has also succeeded in allocating €4.5 million for the development of regional energy transition strategies, including 12 community-led strategies. The company has developed guidelines for regional energy transition strategies, which facilitate the identification, design, and financing of new energy projects.

This collaborative network has already engaged over 500 municipalities, 300 entities, and 2,500 individuals through participatory processes and strategic collaboration.

The initiative is designed to be scalable and replicable, providing a model that can be transferred across Spain and the European Union. By focusing on social innovation, the initiative helps to combat energy poverty while contributing to the global decarbonisation agenda and promoting long-term sustainable energy practices.

Indeed, this is not the first time that RGI has acknowledged Red Eléctrica for an initiative. In 2023, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the 'Good Practice of the Year' awards, RGI selected "Bosque marino" (the Marine Forest)—a pioneering project to restore two hectares of Posidonia oceanica meadows in Mallorca—as the best practice implemented in European electricity transmission grids in the last decade.

In 2022, RGI awarded 'Best Practice of the Year' in Europe to the transmission grid's biodiversity corridors project in the environmental protection category. That same year, the jury also made a special mention of the dissemination of the Network Development Plan 2021–2026. This recognition was awarded to Pastoreo en red, the pioneering initiative to control vegetation under high-voltage power lines through extensive livestock farming that Red Eléctrica is implementing. In fact, this initiative has been considered a nature-based solution by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
