- A biodiversity protocol and a collaboration agreement for the prevention and control of forest fires have been signed
The Chairman of Red Eléctrica de España (REE), José Folgado and the Regional Minister for Development and the Environment of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñones, today signed a protocol for collaboration on biodiversity matters for a four-year period and that can be extended for up to a maximum of a further four years.
The purpose of the protocol is to establish a collaboration model between the two institutions in areas related to biodiversity and the sustainable development of the energy model, especially in the communities in which the Company's infrastructures are located. Specific collaboration agreements will be established in the following areas: biodiversity conservation; birdlife protection; prevention and control of forest fires, and the reforestation of degraded areas.
Red Eléctrica and the Regional Government of Castilla y León will jointly determine, through a monitoring committee, what is to be included in the collaboration activities that will be carried out under this protocol and that will be formalised in the corresponding collaboration agreements.
Collaboration agreement for the coordination of actions regarding the fight against forest fires and their prevention
The Regional Minister for Development and the Environment, Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñones, REE’s General Manager of Transmission, Eva Pagán, and REE’s General Manager of System Operation, Miguel Duvison, and REE’s Corporate Director of Sustainability, Innovation and Institutional Coordination, Ana Cuevas today signed a two-year collaboration agreement for a total of 20,000 euros, that can be extended for an additional 2 years, which sets out the basis for coordinating actions in the fight against forest fires, their prevention and training in this field.
This agreement defines action and coordination procedures for fighting fires, as well as establishing the necessary coordination and methodology for carrying out actions to prevent forest fires, including the treatment of vegetation underneath overhead lines.
This agreement, which will be coordinated through a joint monitoring committee, defines collaboration on: the organisation and delivery of training courses on forest fires for environmental agents and other staff of the Regional Ministry; the drafting of informative material to raise awareness among the population regarding the problem of forest fires, and the undertaking of maintenance works on the access routes to electricity towers for their use by the forest rangers, forestry agents and fire-fighting services.
Red Eléctrica is fully aware that the protection of the forest environment, caring for biodiversity, the respect for the natural environment and the implementation of good practices, as well as improving the integration of its facilities in the natural environment, are priority areas of the Company’s environmental management.
