More than double the capacity offered for 2015
Red Eléctrica and RTE allocate the electricity exchange capacity between Spain and France for 2016
  • The new interconnection line through the Eastern Pyrenees has allowed a total of 700 megawatts (MW) to be offered versus the 300 MW offered in previous years.

Red Eléctrica de España and Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE), operators of the electricity systems of Spain and France respectively, have allocated the electricity exchange capacity for the Spain-France interconnection for 2016. This auction generated revenues amounting to €78.8 million, a figure that is 3.6 times the revenues obtained in the annual auction for 2015. Half of the revenues corresponding to Spain are earmarked for the reduction of regulated costs of the Spanish electricity system

The new 400 kilovolt (kV) direct current line that links Santa Llogaia and Baixas, fully operational since October, has allowed 700 MW of exchange capacity to be offered and allocated; a figure that more than doubles that offered in the previous annual auctions (300 MW).

In the direction France-Spain, 700 MW were offered and allocated, with a resulting final price of 12.78 euros/MW, with capacity having been obtained by 8 of the 18 participating agents. In relation to the direction Spain-France, 700 MW were also offered and allocated, with a resulting final price of 0.79 euros/MW, with capacity having been obtained by 9 of the 18 participating agents.

This auction for the 2016 period has allowed authorised agents to obtain the right to use the exchange capacity available between the two electricity systems, by submitting bids for each and every hour of the year. The auction procedure was conducted in accordance with the European regulation for cross-border electricity exchanges (Guideline Capacity Allocation and Congestion Management -GL CACM-) and has been held for the first time through the Joint Allocation Office (JAO) platform.

The commissioning of the new interconnection line previously indicated between Santa Llogaia and Baixas has enabled up to 2,950 MW of exchange capacity to be reached under favourable operating conditions.
