The electricity consumption of large and medium-sized companies in 2014 grew 3.2% compared with the previous year, according to data from the Red Eléctrica Index (IRE). Broken down by sector, industrial consumption increased 4.7%, and consumption in the services sector dropped 1.3%. The effects of seasonal and working patterns were factored in when calculating this data.

Compared to 2013, of the five activities with the highest electricity consumption, the demand of the metallurgy industry increased by 2.1%, the chemical industry rose 3.2%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products increased by 7.5%, the food industry was up 4.5% and the paper industry fell 1.4%.

The activities that contributed most to the growth in consumption of large companies were: the metallurgy industry with an increase of 2.1%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products (7.5%), the food industry (4.5%), the chemical industry (3.2%) and overland and underground pipe transport (14.8%).

In December 2014, the electricity consumption of these large and medium-sized companies, after factoring in seasonal and working patterns, increased by 1.1% compared with the same period last year. By sector, consumption in the industry sector rose 3.5% and the services sector fell 3%.

Compared to December 2013, of the five activities with the highest electricity consumption, the demand of the metallurgy industry grew 0.9%, the chemical industry fell 0.1%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products increased 0.5%, the food industry was up 0.9% and the paper industry fell 6.6%.

Similarly, activities that contributed most to the growth in consumption of large companies have been: overland and underground pipe transport with an increase of 18.8%, the manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (7.5%), the metallurgy industry, (0.9%), wholesale trade and commercial trade agents (6.9%) and the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products (3%).
