  • 36 hectares have been recovered by planting 12,000 native trees such as oak, pine and wild olive

The General Director of the Natural Environment, Environmental Education and Climate Change for the Balearic Islands, Neus Lliteras, and Red Eléctrica’s Regional Delegate on the Islands, Eduardo Maynau, today visited the Sa Duaia-Es Reco public common land in Artá, where Red Eléctrica and the Institut Balear de la Natura (IBANAT) are concluding the work for the recovery of 36 hectares of forest affected by a forest fire in August 2013.

The reforestation carried out responds to the agreement signed up to by Red Eléctrica and the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Territory of the Balearic Islands’ Government last October and is part of the Red Eléctrica Forest project which the Company carries out nationally.

In accordance with the agreement the reforestation work, which has added 12,000 native trees such as pine, oak and wild olive, will be completed during this month.

In the recovery of this common land, which has had a budget of 165,629 euros, Red Eléctrica has contributed 120,000 euros for the contracting of the reforestation work that has been carried out by local companies to promote socioeconomic development and green employment on the island. For its part, IBANAT has managed the project.

In addition to the reforestation work performed, several initiatives related to the public use of the land will be carried out. In this respect, a hiking trail called ‘Walk through the Red Eléctrica Forest’ will be created for travellers and hikers, with information boards posted along the route which will run through the reforested area. Throughout 2015, informative nature activities will be programmed, such as organising visits for educational centres located in towns within the region, in order to disseminate knowledge regarding the importance of conservation of forest areas.

The Red Eléctrica Forest

The Red Eléctrica Forest is a project of an environmental nature that has been carried out nationally by the Company since 2009 with the aim of collaborating in the conservation of natural areas rich in biodiversity, the restoration of degraded areas, as well as contributing to the fight against climate change.

The Artá project will be the eighth forest created by the Company, after those already carried out in Badajoz, Teruel, Cadiz, Murcia, Valencia, Vizcaya and Albacete. This initiative responds to the commitment undertaken by the Company to collaborate with the Autonomous Governments for the sustainable economic and social development in the communities where the Company’s facilities are located.
