Red Eléctrica de España today concludes the coastal works, in the Bay of Santa Ponsa (Majorca), related to the laying of the second cable of the electricity interconnection between Ibiza and Majorca. During the morning the ship called Atalanti will conclude the work that began on 15 December in the Bay of Talamanca in Ibiza. Shortly work will be carried out off-shore to complete the second circuit of the interconnection. The laying of the first cable between the two islands was performed in November by the ship called Skagerrak.
The link, which will come into service for a trial period in 2015 and that represents an investment of 225 million euros, is especially important for the Balearic Islands, as it will ensure the stability and quality of supply of the islands of Ibiza and Formentera and solve the problem of energy isolation of the islands, linking up the two existing electricity systems (Majorca-Menorca and Ibiza-Formentera).
The electricity interconnection between Ibiza and Majorca is an alternating current 132 kilovolts (kV) double-circuit submarine cable. With a length of 126 km, each link consists of two three-phase cables with integrated fibre optics. This is a pioneering project and a technological challenge of the highest level. Thus, the submarine section of the link, with a length of 118 km, will be the world's longest in alternating current and the deepest in its class, as it runs along the seabed at depths of up to 800 metres.
The land sections of this link, both in Ibiza and Majorca, run underground. In Ibiza, the 5 km route runs from the Bay of Talamanca to the Torrent substation, in Santa Eulalia del Río, and in Majorca, the 3 km underground route runs from the Santa Ponsa substation to the entry point of the link into the Bay of Santa Ponsa, taking advantage of the previous route of the Majorca-Spanish Peninsula link.
