  • Red Eléctrica will invest 33 million euros in the new substation and other facilities in Alcudia
  • The substation will allow an increase in the evacuation capacity of the Es Murterar power station, will increase the supply to the northern area of Majorca as well as guarantee supply to the Na Lloreta industrial estate

Red Eléctrica (REE) expects the construction of the new Sant Martí substation in Alcudia to be completed in December this year, when the facility will be brought into service. The project includes the enlargement of the receiving substation located in the Es Murterar power station and of the Alcudia substation in Aucanada, as well as the laying of new 66 and 220 kilovolts (kV) underground lines. Red Eléctrica has earmarked a total of 33 million euros for the entire works, which began in April 2013. This is a facility of particular relevance to the area as it will increase the evacuation capacity of the generation from the Es Murterar thermal power station and increase the supply to the northern area of Majorca, as well as to the industrial estate of the municipality Na Lloreta.

The Director General for Industry and Energy of the Balearic Islands’ Government, Jaime Ochogavía; the Director of Corporate Affairs and Institutional Relationships of REE, Ana Cuevas; the General Manager of the Transmission Division of REE, Carlos Collantes, and the regional delegate for the Company in the Balearic Islands, Eduardo Maynau, today visited the works of the new facility.

Currently, civil works for the Sant Martí substation are almost complete. The electromechanical assembly work has already begun, while it is expected that the cable laying will be carried out in June. The substation facilities, located in the vicinity of the Es Murterar power station, occupy an area of 20,000 square metres, of which 17,000 are for the Red Eléctrica substation, while the remaining 3,000 square metres house a distribution substation belonging to Endesa Baleares.

The new Sant Martí substation will decongest the evacuation from the Es Murterar thermal power station via a double 220 kV connection and, in turn, will supply via a double line of 66 kV the new demand in the area, especially the Na Lloreta industrial estate. This facility will therefore allow new demand for electricity supply to be dealt with in the municipality and will contribute to the reconfiguration of the distribution of electricity.

From an environmental point of view, it is worth noting that the project is implemented in accordance with the criteria of environmental integration and respect for the environment that Red Eléctrica applies in the construction of new substations.
