The demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula during August reached 21,508 GWh, an increase of 0.1% above that registered in the same month in 2010, after two months in which decreases in consumption were recorded. Gross demand, that is to say, without factoring in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, grew 0.4%.

In the first eight months of the year, electricity consumption reached 171,796 GWh, which represents an increase of 0.6% with respect to the same period in 2010. However, gross demand during this period fell 1.4% in comparison to the same period last year.

In the month of August, 48.3% of the electricity generation came from technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions, mainly due to the fact that during this month there was a large contribution of generation which came from nuclear and renewables.

During this month, generation coming from renewable energy sources represented 25.6% of the total production, compared to 27.2% registered in August 2010. In the first eight months of this year, the production of renewable energy represented 34.4% of the total production, whilst in the same period last year this was 37.3%.
