• The works include the dismantling of 50 towers between Bescanó and La Farga, although a total of 90 kilometres of lines will be eliminated

Today the works for the dismantling of the first section of the 220 kilovolt (kV) lines, running parallel to the 400 kV Vic-Bescanó-Santa Llogaia axis, started in the municipality of Sant Julià de Ramis (Girona). Specifically, this first project consists in the dismantling of 50 towers of the 220 kV line between Bescanó and the new La Farga substation, which is currently under construction.

In total, 18.2 kilometres of line between Bescanó and Sant Julià de Ramis will be eliminated. The works have a deadline of six months and consist of the dismantling of the cables and towers, the removal of the tower foundations and the restoration of the access roads. Subsequently, upon completion of the construction of the new La Farga substation, which is located between the municipalities of Sant Julià de Ramis and Cervià de Ter, the 220 kV line section between Vic and Bescanó will also be dismantled, with the removal of 100 towers from a stretch of 38 kilometres in length.

These dismantling works were presented today at an event in which the recently approved 2030 Sustainability Commitment was also announced, which reflects the Company's commitment to a model that is both strategic and cross-cutting in nature and which has a long-term vision. Red Eléctrica is committed to the Company’s long-term sustainability through the creation of shared value for all its stakeholders by carrying out its activities in a responsible manner. Within the framework of this commitment, Red Eléctrica has adopted a new way of responding to the challenges faced by the Company in the coming years and which is based on four sustainability priorities: decarbonisation of the economy, responsible value chain, contribution to the development of society, and anticipating change and taking action.

The La Farga substation is a key piece of infrastructure in order to complete the 400 kV Sentmenat-Vic-Bescanó-Santa Llogaia axis and to dismantle the 220, 132 and 110 kV lines that run parallel, moreover it will help increase the quality of service and guarantee of supply of the northern half of the province of Girona. With an investment of 31 million euros, it will have two transformer switchyards, one of 400 kV and another of 220 kV, and will be commissioned at the end of 2018.

The global project includes the elimination of a total of 90 kilometres of lines, including the dismantling of the route of the 132 kV line between La Farga and Santa Llogaia and that of the 110 kV Osona-Xirgú line in the Guilleries area, both owned by Endesa.

The four dismantling projects are the result of an agreement between Red Eléctrica, the Regional Government of Catalonia and the municipalities affected by the route, and through which the new 400 kV Sentmenat-Vic-Bescanó-Santa Llogaia axis will incorporate, through the implementation of the line compaction system, the electricity lines that ran parallel to the 400 kV line. When the project ends, the construction of the new line will not have represented an increase in the number of towers, as the number of old towers removed coincides with the number of new towers built.

The elimination of the old electricity line routes represents the most important landscape restoration regarding an electricity infrastructure carried out in Spain in recent years and strengthens Red Eléctrica’s environmental commitment to the territory.
