We are a global operator of essential infrastructure
- This action strengthens the meshing of the transmission grid between the provinces of Seville and Cadiz.
Red Eléctrica de España has invested 2.3 million euros in the repowering of the 220 kilovolt (kV) line that runs between the electricity substations of Alcores, in Los Alcores (Seville), and Gazules, in Alcalá de los Gazules (Cadiz).
The Company has been carrying out the works for approximately one year, which consisted in increasing the height of the towers, reinforcing the existing tower foundations and adjusting the tension of the conductor cables along a route of 113 km.
This type of repowering work improves and optimises the existing infrastructure with minimal impact on the territory and increases the transmission capacity of the line, as well as helping resolve the system’s technical constraints due to transmission capacity. In addition, it also contributes to improving electricity distribution in the area, without the need to build new infrastructure or modify the existing layout of the line.
The repowering of the 220 kV Alcores-Gazules electricity transmission line is included in the 2015-2020 Electricity Transmission Grid Development Plan of the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda.
Red Eléctrica de España has been carrying out this repowering programme for more than 15 years. During this time, more than 5,000 km of 220 kV and 400 kV circuit has been repowered nationwide allowing the overall transmission power capacity to increase by more than 20,000 megawatts.
Recently, the Seville City Council, Red Eléctrica and Endesa signed an agreement for the investment of 54 million euros in the construction of a new substation in the municipal area of Seville that will triple the capacity of the grid in the eastern part of Seville. Said investment also includes the enlargement of the Santa Elvira substation and the construction of a new line connecting up with the Alcores electricity substation.
