The agreement signed by the Council and Redeia, Red Eléctrica’s parent company, will make it easier to attend to those affected by the DANA.
Redeia provided €100,000 to finance the restoration of the building, thanks to the initiative of a local resident and company employee who was affected by the DANA.
The work was carried out as a priority in recent weeks, enabling the citizen support centre to reopen on 20 January.
Besides the tragic cost in lives caused by the devastating effects of the DANA last 29 October, the town of Alfafar also suffered terrible material damage. The Orba neighbourhood, also known as Parque Alcosa, with its 8,000 residents, was among the most severely affected areas.
Alfafar Town Council has operated a Citizen Support Centre (SAC) and Social Services Office in the neighbourhood since 2021. These municipal facilities were badly damaged and although the efforts of many volunteers managed to partially remedy the damage, a part of the space, around 150 m2, was totally destroyed by the flooding, which tore out the walls, ceiling, electrical circuits, plumbing, windows and doors.
Redeia, the parent company of Red Eléctrica, signed an agreement with the Council in which the company pledged to collaborate in the restoration of the facilities so that Social Services and the Citizen Support Service (SAC) could once again be provided from these premises. The objective was to use these facilities as the central point for detecting the needs of the local citizens and organise the help they need, as well as to channel attention to the most vulnerable groups in the area and specifically to provide support to enable those affected to claim the emergency financial relief that they require.
The initiative to donate €100,000 was the result of a proposal submitted by an employee of Red Eléctrica who lives locally and was affected by the DANA. The work was carried out in the last few weeks and the reopening of the Citizen Support Service (SAC) and Social Services Office was successfully achieved today, Monday 20 January.
