The future electricity link that will connect the islands of Ibiza and Formentera has received the relevant administrative permits for construction along with the declaration of public utility from the Directorate General for Energy Policy and Mines of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. Following the project's favourable Environmental Impact Statement in August this year, the current permits allow Red Eléctrica de España to begin the works for the land sections of the interconnection as of this October in both Ibiza and in Formentera. These works will be added to those already underway for the enlargement of the Torrent substation in Ibiza and the construction of the new substation in Formentera.

The electricity interconnection project that will link up the two islands includes the deployment of two 132 kV links between the two substations. The infrastructure has an underwater/submarine section of 27.15 km, with a maximum depth of 62 metres, and an overland section of 5.26 km in Ibiza and 4.8 km in Formentera. In both cases, the route is underground and runs almost entirely through publicly owned areas and runs alongside existing main roads, highways and minor public roads.

Once a project has received a favourable Environmental Impact Statement and has the corresponding administrative authorisations required for its development, Red Eléctrica's main goal is to speed up its execution as much as possible. To this end, for this project, coordination has been intensified with the main public administrations involved in the territory: the Island Council of each island and the municipalities of Santa Eulalia del Río and Ibiza, on the island of Ibiza, and San Francisco Javier, on the island of Formentera.

With a planned investment of 96 million euros, the aim of the future interconnection between Ibiza and Formentera is to bolster and guarantee the electricity supply on the island of Formentera, as it will help cover all the island's electricity demand in a stable and secure manner. On the other hand, it will represent a step forward in the energy transition process in the electricity system of the Balearic Islands as a whole.
