On Saturday 3 April at 2:55 p.m., the electricity system of Gran Canaria registered its maximum record of instantaneous production with renewable energy reaching a total of 190.05 MW, a figure equivalent to half of the island's demand at that time. This new record high represents an increase of 0.67% over the previous all-time high, registered on the previous day, 2 April at 12:50 p.m., when 188.79 MW were generated with green energy technologies.

Between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on 3 April, a total of 186.23 MWh of renewable energy was produced on the island of Gran Canaria, the highest figure ever recorded by Red Eléctrica de España (REE). This figure breaks the record set on 11 August 2020, when 184.80 MWh were generated between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

According to provisional data from Red Eléctrica de España, between 1 January and 5 April 2021, a total of 309,058 MWh has already been produced with renewable technologies, which represents 15.7% of the total generation mix in the Canary Islands to date this year. 

In the last five years, the Canary Islands' electricity power generation fleet has added nearly 300 new MW of renewable power capacity, which means that currently 20.8% of the archipelago’s installed power capacity is ‘green’, with wind power being the renewable technology with the greatest presence in the Islands with a total capacity of 449 MW (representing 14.8% of the generation mix).
