Study of the population status of the Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus distinctus) and of the threats to its conservation

Expand knowledge regarding the status of the population of the Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus distinctus) on the island of Gran Canaria, determining the factors that adversely affect their conservation status.

Results
  • Quantification of population size and distribution patterns of the Stone-curlew.
  • Habitat characterization and analysis of reproductive biology.
  • Study of the threats to the conservation of the Stone-curlew and possible solutions. In 2013 a stretch of electricity line identified as a black spot was marked with spiral bird-flight diverters, the section of line is located in the Barranco de Tirajana and currently is under monitoring.
  • Outreach and awareness campaign: workshops for a total of 700 students of 5 educational centres were taught. Talk sessions, with the presence of environmental groups and associations, were given in the town councils of Arucas and Aldea de San Nicolás and to the Canary-AVAFES group. Dissemination of information on social networks and media in order to inform the public of the activities, reaching more than 600 people.
