We are a global operator of essential infrastructure
- This price will be applied to those consumers who have a Voluntary Price for Small Consumers (PVPC in Spanish) electricity supply contract in place with an reference retailer and who are covered by the simplified mechanism for the compensation of self-produced surplus energy.
- This is one of the measures approved by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition to promote self-consumption of renewable generation through a distributed generation model.
Red Eléctrica de España, as operator of the national electricity system, has started the daily publication of the price per megawatt-hour (MWh), on the system operator’s eSios website, that will be used to compensate self-consumers who feed their surplus electricity into the grid. For this, the self-consumer must have a regulated tariff contract or Voluntary Price for the Small Consumer with an approved market agent and be covered by the simplified mechanism for the compensation of self-produced surplus energy defined in Royal Decree 244/2019 of 5 April by which the self-consumer who feeds their surplus electricity generated into the grid is compensated by way of a reduction on their electricity bill.
This is one of the measures approved by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition that aims to boost renewable energy self-consumption and distributed generation technologies, reduce CO2 emissions associated with electricity generation and serve as a tool to help address and meet the challenges posed by decarbonisation and the fight against climate change.
This price, which will be paid to compensate self-consumers, is the result of subtracting the cost of the deviations from the hourly average price (based on the result of the day-ahead and intraday markets for each hour of the day). Access tariffs are not taken into account for the calculation of this value. In this way, self-consumers who feed their surplus renewable generation into the grid, will get a reduction on their electricity bill.
At 8:20 pm every day, the system operator’s eSios website publishes the next-day’s compensation prices for surplus energy fed back into the grid.
With this new tool, the user plays a more and more relevant role as an active consumer and thus opens up to a new bidirectional relationship between the different actors of the electricity system.
According to the 2021-2030 Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, self-consumption is a relevant tool in order to achieve the targets regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions and the fight against climate change set in said Plan for 2030.
